Beecher, John

Biography: 

(1904–80), writer, reporter, poet, English prof., administrator in various New Deal agencies, esp. Farm Security Admin. Sr. field rep. for FEPC in South (1941–42); handled most organizing, investigation for Birmingham hearings (June 1942). Placed in charge of FEPC’s New York office (July 1942); resigned (Mar. 1943), wrote articles in New
York Post exposing inadequacies of FEPC. Officer on liberty ship Booker T. Washington, first integrated ship in American war effort (May 1943–45). Raised in Birmingham.
