Biography: 

(1902–81) (D-N.C.), newspaper reporter, editor, author; presiden-
tial aide to FDR in charge of racial and labor problems, Southern politics (1943–45); press secy. to Pres. Truman (1945); U.S. member, UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities (1947–53); represented FDR in discussions with FEPC on Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding case (1943), Phila. transit strike, Los Angeles Rail-
way case (1944).
