Biography: 

(1912–), black lawyer; member, exec. committee, Chicago branch,
NAACP; acting civilian aide to secy. of war (1943–45); handled FEPC complaints brought
to attention of War Dept.; criticized by Mitchell for obstructing some FEPC initiatives;
member, Truman’s Advisory Committee on Universal Military Training (1946); won
Medal of Merit Award for Civilians (1947); boxing mgr., promoter, dir., secy., Joe Louis
Enterprises; returned to private practice, Chicago (1960s).
